Do you want an enchanted magical garden sanctuary in your own backyard? l Saw these kind of ideas on Pinterest and I fell in love with any kind of homesteading outdoor structures made from repurposed natural materials and upcycled things, trash to treasure, junk Garden art, rustic fences, twig and stick builds/outbuildings and structures, you name it!
Aside from a lot of those things costing literally no money and being able to be very creative the best benefit of it is having something so you need to you right in your own backyard.
My better half and I built a rustic enchanted enclosed garden made from repurposed fallen tree branches for the fence posts (freely acquired).
For the foundation or base, rail road wood or 6x6(or bigger) wood beams-you could also do fallen trees/long thick logs not rotted for the base foundation.
I had acquired old rail road beams and used that.
To begin:
Decide the size of your garden enclosure and the lengths of each side.
My enclosure was 26 ft x 20 ft.
Design your enclosure ideas by sketching ideas down and deciding the general spacing in between each branch/fence post.
Now is the fun part,
time to adventure around your house(if possible) or woods(you’d need truck or quad with trailer to haul branches if you’re getting the branches from outside of your yard, and surrounding forest.
I live on 4 acres and am surrounded by beautiful woods , marshy bogs and enchanted forests, so I didn’t have to trek very far to get what I need!
I used my quad, with the trailer hooked up to haul the branches to my garden area.
You’ll need gloves and a tape measurer(I used myself as a gauge being I am 5ft tall).
When searching for sticks or branches, I decided to take thicker(about 1.5 in-4 in in width) fallen branches between 5 ft and 6 ft for the main fence posts.
The wood you choose should NOT BE ROTTED and should be harder wood, depending on where you live there’s many options of tree species that would work well even if you have no real or even deep knowledge of identifying trees as arborist would.
I chose mainly straight branches swith slight curves or bends.
Depending on the size of your garden will depend how many branches you need. Mine being 26ft x 20 ft, I figured I’d need at least 20+ sticks for the 26 ft sides and at least 12-15 (ish) for the 20 ft sides.
It will take multiple trips if you’re doing a size like mine.
You now have a large pile of
Collected branches set next to your garden area build site.
NEXT:
You will need to build a foundation/base.
I used FREELY ACQUIRED SCRAP rail road wood, there’s many ways to do this, if on the cheap then search locally on Facebook marketplace or ask people you know if they have anything similar.
The wood could be the railroad wood, 6X6 or larger wooden beams, or large/long fallen trees/logs with or without the bark.
I laid my rail road beams down and screwed them together(if you do not have the precise or correct length you will need to either cut the wood or use multiple pieces, either way you need a foundation rectangle base screwed together.
AFTER THE FOUNDATION
